The Colony of Thieves.

It occurs to me that, for all its geographic beauty and grandeur, and the majesty of its proud and ancient civilization, Australia is a loner of a country deep beneath the feet of the civilized world, and a suitable home for the descendants of convicts, fugitives, malcontents and dreamers.

Maybe the English have been right all along. Perhaps the result of our convict heritage is an Australian national ethos characterized by ignorance, insularity and resentment.
How else could the conservative's policy-free campaign of negative sloganeering, fear mongering and scapegoating in the last election have been successful?

It is no coincidence that, if an errant n found itself inadvertently in a sub-penultimate position in “Aus.”, Australia would be the metaphorical and literal arsehole of the earth.

(While I am on the subject, if an errant d found itself inadvertently in an anagram of British, it would be Birdshit, which is probably worth more than the pound sterling.)
