Misreading the Signals

A trolley crashed through the swinging door of the ambulance entrance.
An extremely distressed elderly man on the trolley was struggling to get off, a flustered nurse doing her best to restrain him.
I lent close to him and quietly asked what was troubling him. "Piss!" he groaned, "Piss!"

I reassured him and quietly told him that I would have him fixed in a jiffy, and asked the nurse to get a catheter tray.

"Piss!" he groaned again, "off!"

Not everybody wants our help.
Sometimes it's best just to listen.
Many just want to be left alone.
It's everyone's right.
