The cell membrane must balance containment with
permeability for a cell to survive, representing a primal, enduring exemplar of
equanimity - opposite but complementary forces in balance - incidentally providing us with a prescription for physical and emotional health.
These concepts figure prominently in Taoist writings
and also occupy an important place in Neo-Confucianism. They
are the basic elements constituting the ch'i
(matter-energy) of which man and all phenomena are formed.
Creative energy and harmony evolve from dynamic balance of the two basic polarities (yin and yang), which, in turn, come from Oneness, the Tao.

I'm not too sure what this all means, but it sounds
great.
Stripped of its Eastern
mysticism, it seems to be simply an injunction for moderation.
Consider
the yin and yang of agony and ecstasy, inebriation and sobriety, gluttony and
starvation.
Perhaps dynamic balance simply translates into
common sense.
I
must admit, though, that oneness, dynamic balance, cyclical growth and
harmonious action have beauty and allure.
The Western pragmatism and banality of “moderation” just doesn’t cut it.

I
intend to get myself in balance.
