Hudibrastic Doggerel is a style of satirical or mock- heroic verse composed in octosyllabic couplets.
Its name is derived from "Hudibras", a satiric mock-heroic narrative poem written by Samuel Butler in 1732.

The Hugh Mearns poem, "Antigonish', is an example  of this style:

"Yesterday, upon the stair
I met a man who wasn't there
He wasn't there again today
Oh how I wish he'd go away."

It's a style used by Australian bush poets, because it is ridiculously simple to write, and Australian bush poets are ridiculously simple.

So here's one from Clibrig:

"As I was following a bird
I stepped upon a fucking turd.
The smell was gross, I had to quit,
my love-life thwarted by a shit."

(Pretty good, eh?)

Deeply profound. It speaks to the deeper struggles of man against his environment.
