Runaway planet

Has anyone else had the feeling that it's all getting a bit out of control?

As if anthropogenic climate change, overpopulation and the corona virus weren't enough, the nation that is the exemplar and symbol of freedom and hope for the planet is in thrall to a temperamental overindulged man-child with bone spurs.

The future appears to be spiralling away from reality, and all we can do is hang on for grim death, like an apprentice jockey on a bolting thoroughbred.

Now is the time for calmness, wisdom and inclusion.
Now is the time for national leaders, even those who have sought office for private rather than common good, to accept that theirs is an immense responsibility.
Now is the time for citizens to accept that suffrage is a privilege and an obligation, and that this obligation must be taken seriously. The days when voting for the Monster Raving Looney Party, just for a bit of a laugh, are long gone.

The national character of Australians is characterised by laconic anti-authoritarianism, and support for the underdog is reflexive, but self-defeating.
Independent candidates are, by definition, single-issue conservatives, and electoral leakage to such candidates significantly handicaps progressive parties.

The right responds by support for whatever single issue motivates these cross-benchers, diverting parliamentary attention from crucial legislation to the demands of, for example, the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party. (Fair dinkum! You couldn't make this shit up!)

But never forget the masses.
The power of the State is immense, but limited.

The power of the masses is irresistible.
Just ask Madame DeFarge.
